   Powerfull zoom would not be too compact.

   Yes there are tons of cameras to choose from.

   Look at Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ series, most of have more than 10x zoom. Looks like a DSLR but smaller, and has attachments for conversion lenses.

   Closest to what you want I came up with the Canon A2000 IS. It’s 6X optical zoom, 10 megapixels, very good battery life and has image stabilizer. Has very good image quality. To get an inkling on price, Amazon.com wants $180+ shipping.

   the Canon SX110IS has 10x optical zoom, 9mp and is just a really great camera
